The Blood Queen

The Blood Queen: A 'Bhanrigh Fuil

A Conall Series Spinoff

by David H. Millar

Genre: Historical Fantasy Fiction

It is a king’s decision,” said Brion.

It will not be you who deceives and delivers the lamb to the butcher’s block,” retorted Eimhir.

True evil is a persistent and tenacious beast. Its desire for existence is eternal and insatiable. It needs to infect only one mind for its insidious philosophy to take root and spread.

It is 394 B.C. At a remote loch in the highlands of Northern Albu, a priest sacrifices nine innocents. Below the water’s surface, a shape feeds on their blood and begins to take form. Soon it becomes sentient and begins to hunt. Sidheag has risen.

Humans cannot defeat the abomination. Neither can Mongfhionn, the powerful leader of the demi-goddesses of the Aes Sidhe. The only remedy is the Blood Queen and Gràinne is the sole heir to that throne. Will the Blood Queen stand alongside Mongfhionn to confront Sidheag?

Yet the cost for Gràinne may be too much—unless her daughter, Brianag, is in jeopardy.

Passions, always near the surface of the Celts, burst into flames in The Blood Queen where father is pitted against son; mother against daughter; sister against sister; brother against sister; and father against daughter.

An avid reader, armchair sportsman, and Liverpool Football Club fan, Millar lives with his family and Bailey, a Manx cat of questionable disposition known to his friends as “the small angry one”!

Award-winning author, David H. Millar, writes historical fantasy with a Celtic twist. He is the author of the five volume, ancient Celtic-based, Conall series and the spin-off The Dog Roses. The Blood Queen is a second spin-off from the Conall series.

Graphic Book Images, Ugh Part Two

Graphic Book Images, Ugh!

Part Two

Hopefully, this article will give you a better understanding of graphics, images, and the need for quality press-ready print ads.

As I stated in the last issue, the language for photo programs are similar. You don’t need to have extended knowledge to create an ad. That’s what graphic artists are for, that’s why you hired them for your cover, and/or ad.

There are multiple formats: jpg, jpeg, jfif, gif, bmp, png, tiff, and pdf to name a few. If you want to know what format your image is, you can hover over the image on your computer and it will tell you what the format is, or item type, and dimension. (300 x 450) It may or may not tell you the bit size, for example, 1mg.

Let’s get to print images. Why do some print images look so fantastic and some look horribly disfigured? Incorrect formatting.

If a film camera is used, the images from a film negative is around 4000 dpi. Yes, you read that correctly, 4000 dpi. If a magazine, and many still do, use a film camera for their ads they’ll have sharp, precise high-quality images that are scanned with very expensive scanning machines. Even after it’s compressed to a pdf file for print and adjusting the magazine for a pdf, website ad, a film camera is incredible when it comes to using images for advertising.

Film cameras are not necessarily old school, but many photographers have switched to digital cameras. High-quality digital cameras that offer the best resolution are up and coming. Their prices are also very high for non-professionals.

They are so close to having the same quality as film. The more megapixels the better the image. (50, 60 megapixels and up)

So, here you are, either getting an image from someone or using your own digital camera. The everyday digital camera buff probably has a camera with 20 megapixels. The magic begins with the photo program and the experienced of the graphic artist.

There are also programs that will create 3D images for you but you must understand how to use them for print ad purposes.

This is a png image after it was downloaded on my computer and adjusted to 150 dpi, 4 x 2.

Insert Ping Image 1 Here

This is the twitter ad created with the png.

Insert Ping Image 2 Here

Since it’s twitter, obviously it’s at a lower resolution, 150 dpi, 4 x 2.5, and not created for print.

Print ads and images shouldn’t be lower than 300 dpi. If there is text in the ad, it shouldn’t be lower than 400 dpi. I prefer 500 dpi for the main reason that once it gets compressed in the pdf file it won’t lose its image quality.

So how does it look for print? The next image will be created at 500 dpi (because there is text. Then, it is formatted for the print shop compressing the image as quality press ready.

The next image you see is considered press ready.

The way this advertisement was created was with a 3D image png. The background was jpg and saved at 500 dpi. The size was created at 8.5 x 5.5. The “unused” border has no text or needed imaging, allowing for trim and bleed. It’s extremely necessary to make sure there is nothing cut off by the print shop.

Insert Halfpageadforarticle500dpi Here

What would happen if I saved my image at 1000 dpi before it goes to print? You may see a slight difference. The pdf program I use takes any images over 450 dpi and compresses them for the print shop. It is not the same pdf program we use for the print magazine.

Insert Halfpageadforarticle1000DPI Here

The compression is set by the person who is using the pdf program.

Even you can remember, the bigger the better, you’ll be okay.

This book’s for you. My whole point of writing it is to help all authors. I’ve had many established authors, aspiring authors, and WIP authors ask me a multitude of questions and I was more than happy to help. Best selling author Janet Morris began writing in 1976 and has since published more than 30 novels, many co-authored with her husband Chris Morris or others. She has contributed short fiction to the shared universe fantasy series Thieves World, in which she created the Sacred Band of Stepsons, a mythical unit of ancient fighters modeled on the Sacred Band of Thebes. She created, orchestrated, and edited the Bangsian fantasy series Heroes in Hell, writing stories for the series as well as co-writing the related novel, The Little Helliad, with Chris Morris. She wrote the bestselling Silistra Quartet in the 1970s, including High Couch of Silistra, The Golden Sword, Wind from the Abyss, and The Carnelian Throne. This quartet had more than four million copies in Bantam print alone, and was translated into German, French, Italian, Russian and other languages. In the 1980s, Baen Books released a second edition of this landmark series. The third edition is the Author's Cut edition, newly revised by the author for Perseid Press. Most of her fiction work has been in the fantasy and science fiction genres, although she has also written historical and other novels. Morris has written, contributed to, or edited several book-length works of non-fiction, as well as papers and articles on nonlethal weapons, developmental military technology and other defense and national security topics.

Janet says: 'People often ask what book to read first. I recommend "I, the Sun" if you like ancient history; "The Sacred Band," a novel, if you like heroic fantasy; "Lawyers in Hell" if you like historical fantasy set in hell; "Outpassage" if you like hard science fiction; "High Couch of Silistra" if you like far-future dystopian or philosophical novels. I am most enthusiastic about the definitive Perseid Press Author's Cut editions, which I revised and expanded.'

I’m a wife, a mother, a writer and an equestrienne.  I’ve been composing stories as long as I can remember and have been putting stories to paper ever since I could hold a pencil.  I have a vivid memory from age five where I sat alone in the stall of my father’s horse and traced the hood prints in the dirt.  An entire story swirled about in my head…who, what, where, when?  My family often grew weary of my constant ramblings about my characters.  As a result, my drawers were stuffed with stories, finished and unfinished. It wasn’t until my two wonderful boys were born that I finally had the nerve to submit my first book.  Fun In The Yellow Pages, a juvenile coming of age novel, was my first publication.  It was well received and actually utilized in several school districts.  I even had the compliment of being ‘visiting author’ which was very enjoyable.  The students constantly asked me to write a sequel.

I actually switched to romance writing on a dare from my husband.  I completed Season Of The Shadow.  The characters were so popular that they wormed their way into my second romance, The Inn At Little Bend, and played key roles in my latest romance, Inside The Grey. Each romance can stand alone, but my readers will recognize several characters.

Graphic Book Images, Ugh!

Graphic Book Images, Ugh!

Part One

Hopefully, by the end of this article you’ll have a better grip on understanding book graphics, images, and the difference for digital and print ads.

The language for photo programs are similar. You don’t need to have the knowledge to create an ad. That’s what graphic artists are for, that’s why you pay them to create a beautiful cover, and/or ad. But, you should know what you’re receiving and how it can be used.

As an author, there are many times when you want to create your own ad, and this is where we’re going with this article. Hopefully, I’m going to help you stop saying “ugh”.

First we’ll start with digital ads. You may have to do some digging to figure out where your commands are on the program you’re using, especially since you may not have the same program I use.

Dpi is dots per inch.

This is a 72 dpi image, jpg, at 3 x 2.

Compacting the images helps save space on your computer but doesn’t keep the picture at the quality needed. This image will look a little better in the digital issue. However, it doesn’t do the image justice.

Below is the same image, 72 dpi, jpg, at 15 x 10. The size is manually adjusted for pdf to 3 x 2 without creating pixelation. When you resize manually, it compresses the picture avoiding pixilation.

When I say manually adjusted, I have highlighted the image and used the size-square with my curser to shrink the picture. I didn’t resize it in a photo program.

How can you make your images look sharp and professional? I prefer jpg or png when I create ads for myself and for the magazine, regardless of whether it is for digital or print.

Resizing incorrectly can effect color, pixilation, and distortion. For digital ads, I prefer using 150 to 225 dpi. Depending on the photo program you use depends on how you will resize your image. The main reason why I prefer the 150 to 225 is because text tends to pixelate more than a picture. If I raise the dpi from 72 or 96 to 150 or 225, it avoids text pixelation.

Part Two March 30th!
